Brandon’s Photographic Evidence of Comic-Con 2012

July 21, 2012

It happened! I was there! Comic-Con is a real place, it is a real event and I have seen it with my own eyes!

This was my fourth (fifth? no, fourth) trip out to SDCC, and it was bigger than ever. This is true both in terms of scale and attendance. It’s one of the few places where it’s flat-out impossible to soak in or experience everything, even over the course of five/six days. Luckily, I brought back photographic assistance of my personal fancies and experiences from this latest go-around.

Hit the jump for roughly 100 images of the con floor, the city, and the surrounding madness of SDCC 2012!

This was the first thing I saw/noticed after settling into the hotel lobby. Every building is wrapped in this city for SDCC, you guys. It’s worse every year.

This year, Syfy apparently wanted to advertise their new show about a Jamaican bachelor who has no idea he’s secretly engaged. (Alt joke from Matt, a coworker: “If you missed ‘De Bachelor,’ you’re probably going to be pretty lost in this follow-up series.’)

I know the Hilton staff is just trying to get into the spirit of things, but they have no idea how badly they’re encouraging the worst parts of Tumblr right now.

Best part of rooming at the Hilton: being in the same hotel as all of the Adult Swim panels for Friday’s work-related matters.

Second best part of rooming at the Hilton: having all of the Batmobiles parked right outside all weekend long.

…Including the night! ALL WEEKEND LONG, GUYS.

“OUR MOVIE GOT PUSHED BACK ALMOST A FULL CALENDAR YEAR FOR UNNECESSARY AND TOTALLY UNREQUESTED CHANNING TATUM RESHOOTS YEAHHHHHHHHH.”

-The Rock, G.I. Joe Retaliation Promotional Banner (2012)

Snagged one of these limited edition, hand-made Adventure Time comics upon request for JKP guest (and listener) Jen. Gotta say, it’s pretty neat. Inside folds out in a crazy way. No, I didn’t get a picture of that. Because then it wouldn’t be as special.

Kinect Avengers! It kinda sucks! Just buy a pair of Hulk hands and one of those tony Thor hammers instead! ‘Nuff said!

Here’s Ed Boon giving a live demo of Cyborg and Nightwing, the two new characters for Injustice: Gods Among Us that were announced at SDCC. He’s a pretty cool guy, from the sound of it. Don’t let his Dick Tracy villain eyebrows fool you.

Game was playable on the show floor, as well! No one wanted to play as Wonder Woman. No surprises there. Sorry, Wonder Woman.

Frank Quitely, yo’ masks be wrankly as hell.

Nite Owl’s got a pretty nice coat.

Heyyy, it’s the Iron Mans, everybody! Remember them? Remember these guys?

I guess Halo 4 was here or something but it was hard to tell. They kept a pretty low profile this year, nice and modest booth. Nothing too over the top.

Played some Little Big Planet Karting! Am I the only person on the planet who’s excited for this? Probably. But hey, I came in 1st and won a stuffed Sackboy. No complaints here. S’fun.

Does machines.

Cool, but rude.

Is a party dude and, uh… leads. (I’m honestly starting to grow more and more fond of Leonardo, I WONDER WHY.)

[vsw id=”l9Xed4jEamg” source=”youtube” width=”640″ height=”390″]

Seriously, Nick’s Turtles display was pretty awesome. After the panel, they kept the new show footage on loop.

They also had a live Twitter thing going where “joining” the Turtles or the Foot Clan in front of a representative won you a cap with your chosen team’s emblem on it, too.

Korra skateboards. Because sure. You know, for leg breakingbending.

I’m rather obviously biased, sure, but Adult Swim’s booth was great this year. “Cat Grab” booth with a live webcam. Fan don the kitty apparel, then flail wildly to grab paper kittens…

…which are then redeemed for exclusive Adult Swim con swag. Pretty fun, line was always super long.

…Is it possible to buy just this entire diorama as-is? No? What if I said please?

Vile in the little robot mech is pretty great, too. Lots of cool little figures here.

CYCLOPS YOU ARE VERY HUGE DOES ANYONE LIKE YOU YET WHAT NO REALLY THAT’S SURPRISING.

Waited a stupid amount of time in line at Entertainment Earth to grab a couple of these for friends, including Tom. You’re welcome, Tom!

CN had their big ol’ 20th anniversary booth up, as well. Thing is huge! This mural is huge!

Ooh, this is a nice little figure comin’ out of the Square-Enix booth. (They make fancy, expensive toys of characters from games by better companies.) Lots of detail, as per usual.

And say, who’s that fucking dork in the mirror who didn’t notice himself until after he took the picture? What a loser.

Femshep, as well! Oh, was your femshep not the default redhead model from the cover of 3? Well, tough luck, then.

SPAR’AAAAAN. SPAR’AAAAAN. SPAR’AAAAAAN LAWRENCE.

Alright so MAYBE I got a Leonardo for myself at Entertainment Earth’s booth, as well. Maybe that happened. Maybe he’s in the podcasting studio right now. Maybe I’m super happy with this purchase. Maybe you can shut up, MAYBE ALL OF THAT.

OH IS THERE A SEGA EVENT HERE MY STARS I HAD NO PRIOR IDEA. WHAT A TOTAL SURPRISE.

OH IS THIS GAME HERE? OH IS IT ALSO PLAYABLE? WHAT LUCK THAT I WALKED SPECIFICALLY IN THIS DIRECTION OF TOWN AND HAPPENED UPON YOUR LITTLE VENUE.

MY GOODNESS THE SURPRISES JUST KEEP COMING BECAUSE AS PREVIOUSLY STATED I HAD NO IDEA AT ALL I played it three times it’s great.

Nintendo had their own thing going at the Hyatt, too. Or wait, is it the Marriott? The one to the right of the convention center. I get confused. I just walk in a building and start taking pictures, I guess.

Gave this little thing a whirl. As stated in the last podcast, it’s a marked improvement. 3D works way, way better on the bigger screen (because duh). Definitely going to upgrade to one of these.

Pictured: the coolest dudes at Comic-Con. (Honestly though this is a pretty cute idea.)

Oh, uh. Oh. Hello, Poison Ivy. Hello. Uh. I’ll just… I’ll take this picture for Zack here at the Sideshow Collectibles booth. Yes, that is why. Yes. For Zack. Of course.

No foolin’, their Joker was pretty sweet, as well. Those hands are great.

And pfffsh, this guy. You’re at Comic-Con, smile for god’s sake. Ya’ puss.

Pictured: the future of DC Nation! (Spoiler warning, cross out Green Lantern and the Young Justice folks. Oops. Oops, DC Nation, oops.)

MORE BATMOBILES. Hey you guys, remember when Val Kilmer was Batman and he drove around in a giant rubber croc shoe? Remember that? Guys? Where are you going.

Alright so on Friday I did all the Adult Swim interviews for our show talent and the most bizarre thing of the whole day was THESE TEENAGERS at the Robot Chicken Q&A who apparently represented a legit press outlet of some sort. God, just look at that kid. Look at his cap. Don’t you just want to smack his face right off his body? Also, the girl is standing on a fucking skateboard, I shit you not.

OH SO I GUESS I WENT TO SONIC BOOM 2012. I guess that’s a thing I did. Show of hands, who is even remotely surprised by this?

Jun Senoue of Crush 40 (and all the buttrock Sonic game music of the past thirteen years) actually did a pretty excellent job of bringing the damn house down.

[vsw id=”HB7KuKG2MQw” source=”youtube” width=”640″ height=”390″]

See? He’s pretty great, there. So is the music.

Screw you guys, this was a lot of fun. I had a great time.

[vsw id=”kcSoTZk18gY” source=”youtube” width=”640″ height=”390″]

Johnny Gioeli came out next to fully form Crush 40 and sing some favorites like “Open Your Heart” and “Live & Learn.” I recorded this one mainly for Josh because he used to have an entire fight sequence choreographed to this and mapped out in his head.

More Turtles! It was a pretty Turtle-heavy con for people named Brandon, turns out.

Here’s a quick example of how Showtime used those “advice” meme templates as a legit marketing strategy this year. Impact font and everything. It was at their booth, on buses… everywhere. Incredibly gross, guys. I’m sure some exec got a big ol’ handy for it right there on the conference table.

If I had enough room and money I would just surround myself in these fucking things. I’m sure Heidi would love that, wouldn’t you Heidi?

These Shuya superhero figures are pretty cute. It’s all about the little touches, like Harley’s big hammer and Wonder Woman’s big… hammer.

For those who have never been, here’s a rough idea: this photo is only pointing at one half of the convention center.

There are a lot of people, is basically what I am saying.

Shiftylook’s alright. They take ancient Namco properties and turn them into webcomics, basically. They had a free retro arcade setup where Scott Pilgrim’s thing was in 2010.

Anyone ever heard of or care about Wonder Momo before? No? Well, what if she has this outfit on, how about now? Anything?

Oh look, Youtube bought a building to host an official Youtube experience.

What.

Taken from the pedestrian bridge to the Hilton. Doesn’t look so crowded from this high up and far back!

Stopped by Kris Straub’s table, bought a Chainsawsuit book. He and Scott Kurtz had just announced a new project for Shiftylook, as mentioned above: a series of official “blamimations” about Mappy! I asked him to sketch a quick Mappy for me. He said they didn’t have a design at all, yet. I said that’s even better.

Usually not a fan of this particular mode of “vinyl doll” collectible thingies, but the giant Maleficent one was pretty cool.

Heck and dang yes One Piece New World statues. Heck and DANG yes.

Little close-up on Franky here. Have yet to read all the cool new things his upgraded body can do. I have so much catching up to do with this series it’s not even funny.

Modecai and Rigby were pretty huge and precariously balanced on top of the CN booth. Nice to see them getting a prominent spotlight amidst an entire convention of Adventure Time stuff.

Pffsh this hobbit movie is gonna suck yall its just a shitty clone of lord of the rings i loved those movies when i was eight yo what s a book yall what even is that.

Bombur the Dwarf, posted without commentary.

Hulk has great abs. He probably flosses, too.

Guys it’s He-Man’s birthday please come to his pool party. Please. He’s been so excited and he thinks you’re all coming, please just do this for him.

Decided to take some generic show floor pictures of nothing in particular. This is roughly 1/16th of the floor.

“Mega Man? What’s a Mega Man?”

-Any Child Under Ten

ARCHAIA FUTURE PUBLISHER OF “THE BRIARY MAID” BY TALENTED ARTIST HEIDI KRAEMER COMING SOON FROM ARCHAIA IT’S GONNA BE GREAT REMEMBER THE NAME YOU GENUINELY HAVE NO IDEA.

…seriously though, Archaia is great. Nice booth this year, too.

Oh my goodness that weird-lookin’ Iron Man 3 armor came out to play on Saturday/Sunday! Marvel always kills it at their booth with a sudden introduction/movie tease like this, every year. The DC booth is just crossing their arms and throwing frowns from across the aisle.

Oh would you look at that, more Turtles! My goodness. Someone sure likes Ninja Turtles.

My goodness it sure is Brandon. These smaller figures do look really nice. (Oh look, it’s my hat.)

Love the little puff of smoke coming from the grapple gun, there. Delightful. Friggin’ delightful.

Aaaand that’s a wrap! This was the last photo, taken literally five minutes before I ran back to the hotel to claim my bags and hop in a friend’s car.

Had a blast this year, already looking forward to the next one. They’re bloated, crowded, visually overwhelming and loud as hell, but it’s reliably and unfailingly the most fun that your feet will ever regret.

Next up: Dragon*Con!

Wow great pictures and comments Brandon! One little side note… the megaman x toy display. You call him Venom are you sure you didn’t mean to write Vile? Just wondering.

How bad did you want to steal that Sonic statue?

    • The inside of Brandon’s house is already littered with every manner of Sonic thing imaginable. He needs another Sonic statue like I need a Nintendo system.

true but that looks like its a 4ft statue and thats awesome.

and its not like you would say no to a Supaboy or some other awesome Nintendo system.

      • Fess up, you’re just worried a sonic statue would usurp your role as “Needlemouse”
