Lots of fighting game news to come out of SDCC, surprisingly, most of which relates to current dark empire and target of laser-focused hate, Capcom. Hit the jump and catch a run-down of some of the headlines, including Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken getting Poisoned, the worst Darkstalkers tease yet, and Yoshinori Ono being a dirty, dirty cheater.

I laughed my ass off when I saw this. For those of you who aren’t in the know, let me explain: Activision Blizzard are the same people who ran Guitar Hero into the ground, had their entire Call of Duty staff leave because they refused to pay them what they were due after making the most profitable video game of all time, and is run by the Devil, currently known on this plane of existence as Bobby Kotick, a man famous for saying “I’d like to take the fun out of making video games”. To name a few. Continue reading »

‘Sibley Put’ is where Josh Sibley, real American hero, boldly and unabashedly dissects the hot-button issues of modern video gaming and its surrounding culture. Everything he says is to be taken as personally as possible, so get those brows ready for some serious-ass furrowing. You babies.

This. This is actually it. After almost 20 years, one of my oldest favorite companies responsible for my favorite video game character of all time has finally let me know in no uncertain terms that they want nothing to do with me.

They have told me in the clearest language possible that they do not care about their fans, much less listen to them, even to the point that they will create PR nightmares in order to ignore them.  They have actually made the entire process of becoming a fan of one of their properties toxic.  They are so obsessed with squeezing every last drop out of an even moderately successful game that they will sacrifice anything, and they have communicated in the most succinct way I can think of that whoever is in charge of the company is utterly impervious to anything resembling common sense or even a rudimentary understanding of the game industry. 1up.com recently posted an interview with Keiji Inafune, asking about the status of his two new companies and getting some further perspective on where his head’s been for the past seven or eight months.

He discusses many of the points we touched upon in the last podcast, Crazies vs. Crazies– most notably the lingering aura of arrogance that is seemingly tripping up the Japanese gaming industry, which is why I’m linking to it. It’s an interesting read and is certainly worth your time.

Oh yeah, and he is also going to be featured prominently as a cameo in the sequel to an OS-tan game about sexy, mostly-naked game consoles because of course he is, why would he not be?

You stay classy, Keiji Inafune. Pyew-pyew.

Okay, so there’s this. In case you’re a non-clicker-reader, that link talks about yet another irritating outsider writing up a loony article about racism in games. “Why is it loony?” you might ask, heart all a-flutter. Not because there’s not racism in games, oh no. It’s because the examples they pick out are absolutely, one hundred percent off the mark and racist free. Let’s take a quick look, shall we?

Hey, so Tekken is crossing Street Fighter! Street Fighter is crossing Tekken! Have you heard this? Have you heard about this? It’s pretty big news! You got your Ryu in my peanut butter! You got your peanut butter in my Kazuya Mishima! Two fighting franchises that have only ever been marginally compared and contrasted due to their wildly varying gameplay engines and combat mechanics will finally go toe-to-toe and duke it out in an awkward release of simultaneously-yet-independently developed fraternal twin games to inarguably prove which franchise is more popular and beloved!*

That is way better than a new Darkstalkers game, Camcom! Well done! Good job!

REALLY good job for Namco, though, seriously. No joking there, grabbing onto the gilded coattails of the unstoppable Street Fighter franchise is a brilliant move on their part. Because no one really cares about Tekken.

I want to bring to light a couple of things I saw today that dovetail nicely with a couple of points I was making in the latest podcast.

First, there’s this.  They really nailed the aesthetic of those old game commercials from my childhood.  It’s actually really difficult to make something properly aged and weathered, and I appreciate the craftsmanship there.

Beyond that, this is probably the worst case of pandering I’ve ever seen in my life.
