We’ve talked about Homestuck a couple times on the podcast, much to the chagrin of all none of you who read it, and once it completes we’ll probably talk about it one more time. Oh, and then there’s the adventure game, which we’ll also talk about. Probably. Point is, I know a lot of you don’t read it, and I aim to do my best to rectify that, especially considering the story is on a multiple month-long break. It’s the perfect time to catch up. What follows is an episode guide of sorts, a stone skipping across the high points of this massive story. Continue reading »

‘Sibley Put’ is where Josh Sibley, real American hero, boldly and unabashedly dissects the hot-button issues of modern video gaming and its surrounding culture. Everything he says is to be taken as personally as possible, so get those brows ready for some serious-ass furrowing. You babies.

I feel pretty bad. I have a couple articles that I’m 99% done with, but I keep having to tweak them because minor things keep happening. If I made a game myself, it would be Duke Nukem Forever all over again. But something happened today that bumps right up against our gender equality episode we had awhile back, something that perfectly illustrates the points I was making about being all for gender equality and fighting the good fight, as long as that fight is on the up and up.  Continue reading »

The podcast this week recorded yesterday, and thus we didn’t get to talk about the new endings for Mass Effect 3 that were released the morning I’m writing this. I’m sure we’ll discuss them somewhat next week, but we kind of don’t really need to. Since I never really got to have my own standalone article on the subject, I decided to do one for these new endings. You know, a short one. Continue reading »

There are times when I wish I had a hobby whose community I could be proud of, a hobby whose fans for once in their angry, entitled lives took a step back and made a real effort into not being utterly ridiculous. Then I soon realize other hobbies have to deal with this as well and I’m brought back down to Earth, shaking my head all the while (I’m sure Harrison has to deal with fellow propmakers who whine about the cost of resin or some shit, but I digress). I laughed my ass off when I saw this. For those of you who aren’t in the know, let me explain: Activision Blizzard are the same people who ran Guitar Hero into the ground, had their entire Call of Duty staff leave because they refused to pay them what they were due after making the most profitable video game of all time, and is run by the Devil, currently known on this plane of existence as Bobby Kotick, a man famous for saying “I’d like to take the fun out of making video games”. To name a few. Continue reading »

This. This is actually it. After almost 20 years, one of my oldest favorite companies responsible for my favorite video game character of all time has finally let me know in no uncertain terms that they want nothing to do with me.

They have told me in the clearest language possible that they do not care about their fans, much less listen to them, even to the point that they will create PR nightmares in order to ignore them.  They have actually made the entire process of becoming a fan of one of their properties toxic.  They are so obsessed with squeezing every last drop out of an even moderately successful game that they will sacrifice anything, and they have communicated in the most succinct way I can think of that whoever is in charge of the company is utterly impervious to anything resembling common sense or even a rudimentary understanding of the game industry. I know we’ve talked about this on the podcast recently, but Nintendo’s Wii2 is slated for this Tuesday’s press conference. I figured I’d elaborate on what I think the future holds.

I don’t really want to talk a lot about this, because there’s very little to go on, but DC Comics just announced that they’re going to relaunch pretty much everything at number one in September, de-age all their heroes, and have Jim Lee redesign about fifty dudes. They’re also announcing that they’re delivering digital versions of their comics the same day as the actual print versions. My first thought was “Great! Just in time for no one to read them!”

That’s not true though, I’m just being snarky. The truth of the matter is that this is an awful, boring, and most of all utterly un-needed summer revamp. The main problem with this is that the DC universe, for probably the first time in its 76 year history, doesn’t need a drastic overhaul to not be utterly stupid and untenable. Continue reading »

As you might have heard around the internet, webcomic extraordinaire Penny Arcade recently did a comic that offended a bunch of people.  To treat this as a rare occurrence is, of course, silly. Penny Arcade does almost nothing but offend people.  That’s what it’s there for: to offend people and sell t-shirts.  What you may NOT have heard about is the feminist blog post that sparked the controversy.  I learned a valuable lesson a long while back: If you hear that someone’s upset with something, and your first reaction is “What?  Why would anyone be upset with that?”, the most likely answer is because they’re a lunatic.
