I listen on my drive to work and spend half my day trying to figure it out. EJ was easier because I played the HD xbla version last week.

Josh like I said last week, as long as they are upfront with the QTE gameplay that is passable. The dlc is stupid and should have been included and it’s a renter at best (thanks gamefly)

At this point I couldnt give less of a fuck on what CAPCOM is doing: no rival schools, no power stone, no darkstalkers, no cool games :( I’m to the point I am going out and getting a ps2 again just to play those games again

    • I remembered!
about the ps vita…when I was at gamescom, it was the first time I held a DS and it was ok. had a bit of experience with the psp some time ago, it was ok, but with the vita…let’s put it this way. I was a game tester for about half a year and they are developing a game for the ps vita, which I could try. It was 3 months before it got to stores, but I decided not to, due to it not looking like something for me and last week I saw it in a store, tryed it and just hated it.

It was a pain just to hold, since it was a little bit bigger than the psp. I was playing uncharted, which looked great, controlled great, but I could simply not get it in a comfortable position.

also, when will I see how zack thinks I look like and GamesCom 2012 is quite close, if you know what I mean =)

21 Jumpstreet is amazing!!!!!!! It is nothing like the other buddy cop movies. The writing for it is amazing and all the action scenes are totally amazing. One of the better movies of the year for comedies.

I went to go see Wrath of the Titans on Sunday wih friends. It’s not horrible but it’s not amazing. It’s better than Clash and they did alright with he sequel treatment, they touch on the fact that a gods power and life is based around the belief and prayer of f that god. That being said one of the complaints was that they only show Zeus, Hades, Posidon, Ares and Athestus and just say “oh the other gods are dead because nobody prayed to them.” which is a BS way of writing them out. The monsters and effects aren’t anything to write much about sadly especially that the first movie was all about the monsters and the wow factor. Ultimately it’s a movie, it’s good not great. I give it a 3 out of 5. Best thing from it was seeing the Hobbit trailer on the big screen.

Brandon touched on this a while back, there is a website called chud that does great reviews of movies and they rarely skip releases. Usually I go there or ask the writer from the site, Renn if he has seen the movie and what he thinks about it. They are brutally honest about if it’s a movie worth seeing in theatres or if it’s a renter at best.

You were talking about XBLA games, I don’t know if you can gift through XBL. I do have a work around for you; you can by a lot of the XBL games and content at gamestop in the form of codes, and then send said codes to your recipient who can then plug them into XBL.

    Hope it helped.

  8. It’s fine to question the value proposition of a game, but to outright deny it has any merit whatsoever simply because “it’s got a bunch of quicktime events in it” is a little silly. Yet another flippant and sweeping generalization, I guess.

But this is just going back to the discussion about games like Comic Jumper, and whether or not being funny, or having a good story, or great visuals is enough to warrant a purchase. Some people may not find various games fun to “play”, but that does not mean the games are not worth experiencing, because they do accomplish something else besides gameplay. That goes for games that have simply broken or unorthodox controls as well, I think. Deadly Premonition and Kid Icarus Uprising being examples.

the gameplay of Journey was in no way revolutionary, or even “fun”, and this is coming from a huge fan of platformers. But I still played the damn game three times through, because it was so aesthetically pleasing and stylish. Asura’s Wrath is equally aesthetically pleasing and stylish, to me (and many others, I’d venture), and I’ll play it for the same reason. And while Journey was only 15 dollars and Asura’s Wrath is asking for 60, I’m more than happy to wait for Asura’s Wrath to go down in price so that I can experience all the crazy shit in it first hand.

Just finished Asuras Wrath, and yes It has 2 endings and 1 is a cliffhanger that I can believe was designed more for a direct sequel and less for a DLC additive. You don’t need to play a single level in hard to get the alt ending you just need to get a considerable amount of S rankings throughout the game and then replay the last level. Like I said last week: combat solid, shooter aspect comparable to panzer dragoon, beautiful designs and illustrations. Would have definitely preferred A.W.2 over another Devil May Cry but since its Capcom it will never see the light of day unless CyberConnect2 spends all their .hack and Naruto money to wrench it from Cap’s cold dying fingers

I do agree with Josh in the notion that games like Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden (with the exception to the recent baby game NG3 became) that they do stack the difficulty and make it so you have to grind to get any upgrade, but how do you think they should incite replayablility without DLC chapters or stacking the upgrades?

      • By making it fun. There are several games that I’ve played multiple times, simply because the stuff you did in it was fun and I wasn’t done doing it by the time the game ended. I’ve never been a big hater on DLC, I just hate that they don’t implement it properly hardly ever. Either give me a big chunk of content that folds seamlessly into the main game, or depending on the genre, give me equipment or characters that enhance a playthrough of what you already have. Examples of this would be the characters packs for Marvel:Ultimate Alliance and the Big Surf Island pack for Burnout Paradise.

    • Tyler, my big thing about Asura’s Wrath being automatically bad because it’s about half quicktime events boils down to definitions. Quicktime events aren’t gameplay, they’re cutscenes. I know you press buttons during them sometimes, but that’s not “control” or “challenge”. It obliterates the entire reason video-games exist as a separate medium.

So let’s break it down: You’ve got a barely 6 hour game, cutscenes included. Considering half of that “gametime” is cutscenes and the rest of it is a shooter/brawler is nothing incredible, and also taking into account they’re charging sixty bucks for it, you’ve got a terrible game. Indie developers with half the staff and a fourth of the budget do things twice as incredible. Trust me when I say supporting Capcom’s sloth and bad decisions will not be to your benefit.

I’m sure what happens in Asura’s Wrath is crazy awesome and aesthetically pleasing and all that, but they’re not letting me play it. They’re making me watch it. It would have been an incredible movie, but they didn’t make a movie. All they ended up doing was either making a game that got in the way of stuff I wanted to watch, or making a game that I never got to play. They’re also charging me twice the amount that a DVD would cost. Journey is a different beast: It’s a complete experience. You control it yourself every step of the way. Asura’s Wrath is not an experience, because it doesn’t fully commit to either letting you passively watch or actively participate. I would also like to point out that this is Capcom clearly and blatantly making a corner-cutting cash-grab while working as little as possible, and should be boycotted on that reason alone.

Aesthetics and craziness and good writing and wonderful music are literally meaningless without a good game to glue it all together. It’s why me and Brandon say that Tim Schaefer should stop making games and start making animated movies: Everything about his games are great except the game itself, so his games are bad.

I’ve played too many games that relied completely on style and novelty while having nothing else gameplay-wise to fall back on, and they’re always boring and terrible. See: everything Suda51’s ever done.

It’s like the old saying goes: You can mix in two gallons of ice cream with one gallon of shit, and what you’ll end up getting is three gallons of shit.

      • I’m probably speaking out of turn, having only played the demo, but I do believe that QTE’s can be done right, and I feel like Asura’s Wrath does accomplish this on multiple occasions. While some of them were just “press the y button at the right time”, alot of them had you hitting specific buttons to accomplish specific things, you just couldn’t do them on a whim. It’s extremely guided gameplay, but it has to be to get the effect that they wanted. It’s like they took the last few chapters of Metal Gear Solid 4 (the microwave crawl and the fist-fight, specifically) and made a whole game of stuff like it, which I’m entirely okay with. As I said, not at a 60 dollar price point, and I’ll be speaking with my wallet. Knowing what we all know about Capcom’s practices, this won’t matter in the long run as this IP will probably be forgotten this time next year, I still intend to have a good time with it.

I’ll always agree with you on the fact that Double Fine makes games I’d rather watch then play, and to some extent Suda51 falls in that category as well (when he’s not working with someone else who can actually craft good gameplay, see Shadows of the Damned), I’m almost certain that switch will never happen. Tim Schafer is far too engrained in the gaming world at this point, having spent the better part of his life in it.

Ultimately I agree with Josh in saying its not worth the $60 price point and even Giant Bomb said it would have done better at 40 in sales although I have to say that unlike with other hack/slash games from Capcom (Onimusha and DMC) you do get some aspect of immersion and the story does carry very well with the art style. I don’t feel that it would have made a better reception as just another anime and even though it does have a “true ending dlc” on the horizon I think the vanilla ending does it enough justice to do without it. Also remember that I rented it for $9 dollars, at best I would pay 35 maybe 40 for the game outright but at that point I would feel like I deserve all the dlc with purchase.

Part of me does agree with the Tim Schafer comment but we’ll have to see how this point and click adventure goes in the future because that is his wheel house. I don’t blame DF for how Brutal Legends ended up (being half a great game that failed because it ended up going a different direction towards the end) I look at that more like EA told them they had to incorporate some aspect of multiplayer (because nowadays EVERYTHING needs multiplayer D:) and DF went, fine we’ll make it an RTS.

I’ve never really given Suda51 the time of day and I doubt I ever will.

If some of this doesn’t make sense, sorry I’m kind of drunk… burp. :S

  9. So upon reading PA this week, I learned that Mr. Apicary and Ms. Nigri were totally cool with the reasons they were told to leave the con, which is pretty awesome. It’s funny how people on the internet blow things up to goofy proportions… also funny how a lot of people think Mike (Gabe) hates women because of the Lollipop Chainsaw thing. Also the big thing about Apicary’s character is that he has been kicked out of every single con he has been in (screw attack has kicked him out every year and they pay him to go) The underwear dance was also suppose to be a part of a larger vid where they show him dancing around random places in his underwear ( like the Madeon video)

The one thing I took from this year more than any other PAX experience is how they have sort of become what they were trying to get away from and that’s the old E3. It’s become (at least for the big games) just a big hype machine where people do dumb crap for a free Tshirt or a toy and less about exhibit the game. D: Harrison said it best “bristling with garbage”

  10. Don’t knock it until you try it. That was just the one part of PAX, where the games and stuff are. Believe me, 2 years ago at the first PAX East there were t-shirt hawkers and picks for guitars and a whole bunch of other stuff, and I’m sure it was there earlier, too. Free stuff draws attention to booths.

That said, there are rooms and rooms and rooms of other things that make it much more than anything E3 could ever offer. The talks, game rooms (not just video games), panels, and general atmosphere make it pretty great.

After hearing Shadra’s email I took some time checking out based on sales the games that defined each generation of systems down to the NES along with corresponding spokespersons for each system. Is anybody interested in this information or did I just waste my spare time at work?

they said that they arent doing that anymore and this whole thing is almost every system from NES to now so… its almost article sized

while “researching it” I came across this fun fact: The PS3 was released 6 years ago this November, the PS2’s life span was also 6 years and they releases 2016 games (note this is he wikipedia total so it includes international games and announced games)

The PS3 sits at 755 games… where’s all the games?

The Xbox to Xbox360 is a difference of like less than 100 games
