  1. Re: How to read One Piece legally and not be a year behind --

Do you guys know about Shonen Jump Alpha? http://www.sjalpha.com/ It’s 2 weeks behind Japan (so 2 1/2 behind the leaked scanlations) and very cheap. The image & translation quality is far above what the illegal versions are providing. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start. Here’s a FAQ http://shonenjump.viz.com/faq

In fact here’s a podcast with a long discussion (0:59:36 minutes in) of Scanlations vs. SJ Alpha, including the translators for One Piece both official and unofficial both contributing to the conversation http://onepiecepodcast.com/blog/2012/02/13/episode-205-the-pirates-life/ If I recall correctly, a lot of issues including why it’s still a few weeks behind, etc are touched upon.

I’m not trying to start a big thing about Scans vs. Official (I’ve seen my share of flame wars about it in the last few months), but the question of why this doesn’t exist was raised on the podcast, so I thought I should point out — it does!

    • Ha! Thanks, Joey! I’ll be sure to point this out to Josh. I’m sure Zack has heard about it by now, we missed him this week.

Also, I *swear* we’re doing a One Piece episode once Zack, Josh and I are all on the same page and caught up with the Straw Hats.

    • I pay for SJ Alpha solely because of One Piece, I’m glad there’s finally a respectable source for it that isn’t two damn years behind the storyline.

      • Yeah, I saw a breakdown on a forum where even if you only read one of the 6 series included you’re still only paying about 50 cents per chapter. Not bad!

I read the whole issue every time (hey, I paid for it why not?) but definitely One Piece is the biggest draw for me as well. I recommend Bakuman, I think it’s a really good series. Toriko is enjoyable, and pretty easy to follow, not having read it in the past. Naruto, Bleach, and Nura are fine, but might be hard to follow if you haven’t been reading them up to this point. Nura especially — I like how it’s drawn, and yokai are a cool subject, but I have no idea what the hell is going on :P

Also, Korra is awesome. Michele and I happened to catch the preview episodes when they were online, and we’re pumped!

  2. Downloading the podcast now, but I had to see the fan art. So Zack is the orange one with gutters/panels. Harrison is the red one with, twilight princess emblem? Branding is the blue with jkp building blocks. Josh is gray with his speech bubble, and tom is white with? I know I have seen it but some kind of heart tank? I hope its covered on the podcast. Looks great though.

  5. I second everything Joey said above.

also, goddamn, Sparkster? Really? I even checked some of the songs to do a comparison and thought “nope, couldn’t be”

I’ll take a shot in the dark at this new one: Adventure Island on NES?

  6. I listen to old podcasts at work and oddly enough in your 12/11/10 podcast Harrison describes his experience at valve and the machine to play the half life 3 beta you have to put your dick in to play. It makes gold and an occasional kitten, but this is the second time dicks in future games has come up.

  8. Re: One Piece Manga translations: It takes an exponentially longer time to do a pro-level manga localization than it takes to slap a translated script on the episode. Because the JP animation companies have their scripts in advance and, assuming the voice actors stick to the script, they can have a translation in advance-- plus, the JP company could even provide timestamps for dialogue/lipflaps.

Manga teams, otoh, are usually rushing to the last minute and lettering comes last. With the added problem of translating sound effects graphically and other edits that also add up to a translation that is visually acceptable (because let’s face it-- most scanslations look like shit), expecting an American company to dump money and personnel into manga, something which sells poorly anyway, is pretty unrealistic.

Re: Free to play games (and microtransactions): My only long-term experience with this is the Sims Social (ie, that thing that clogs me and Dana’s facebook feeds if you haven’t hidden the app feed). It completely revolves around having friends and showing off your house and stuff. The pay-for stuff is often cooler than the regular stuff, but they also give you free SimCash (their pay-tokens) for logging in 5 days in a row, and you can also earn the money by taking surveys and stuff. So, there are ways to get cool stuff without paying (but the company probably makes money through the survey company). Anyway, it has terrible customer support, a lot of bugs, but damn, it’s a great thing to waste ten minutes on between homework assignments or other tasks. I love the visual look, and it lets me spend fake money on things because I have no money to spend. With weekly themes/events, it’s really fun.

    Anyway!

    …. yeah, that’s it.

  12. Hey there pit stain. XD

Great podcast. Just wanted to add to the Kid Ricarus talk. I am a huge fan of the game and love the redesign. The Kid Icarus franchise was a great choice the only detriment to it is the control scheme which you guys have already discussed. The music is phenomenal and the call backs to the original NES. The first Icarus is one of the reasons I fell in love with game music.

    • After listening to this podcast and others like Giant Bomb praise the game’s content over it’s controls, I went out and bought it today…and played for 4 hours straight.

You dun good this time, Nintendo, albeit through a very baffling control scheme.

      • hows your hands feel?

Also I started playing Asura’s wrath saturday (after hearing Giant bombs unrelenting praise) and that is a Damn good game

        • That’s next on my list, for the same reasons you’ve stated, and because of the demo. Who knew I’d be playing so many rail shooters this year and enjoying it?

        • If a new panzer dragon ever gets made I want this developer to make it. They really mastered the craft with Asura just wish the combat was more fluid like devil may cry or bayonetta. It is QTE heavy but unlike in resident evil they were upfront saying it was going to be that type of game. The episodic style works perfectly and makes you feel like your watching a really good Kung fu drama or anime.

  13. If you missed the Legend of Korra premiere they have released a download code from Itunes so you can get it for free, making them one of the easiest things to be a fan of. :D

  14. “how to promote a show: the right way”

Coming back to the whole digital distribution discussion and how it will promote crazy sales instead of crazy pirating unlike Game of Thrones which will bitch and moan about how people won’t buy the show yet won’t sell it digitally until the series is finished. >:C

  15. Where’s the new podcast, it’s usually up by 9 o’clock on Tuesday night?

    • I’m with Ryan, where’s the new podcast? I usully listen to it while I study on Tuesday night.

      • Only a couple of minutes away, guys. Uploading as I type this.

“Go live” time varies every Tuesday night depending on how soon I can drive 20 miles home in traffic, eat something, etc. That, and some episodes take a bit longer to edit than others.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I appreciate the investment!
